The line between erotica and porn is a fairly arbitrary one, depending on who you talk to. It might even be an imaginary one. But I do have my own personal definition, and it serves me well enough, since I write both. I don’t get offended when someone says I write porn, only when they point to the wrong story! :) To put it simply:

Erotica is story with a lot of sex, often integrated into the progression of the plot or growth of the characters.

Porn is a sex story, in which the story framework serves almost exclusively for getting the characters in a sexual situation; story presented for the sole purpose of getting the reader or viewer off.

To put it even more simply:

Erotica = Sex with Plot

Porn = Sex without Plot (or with very little)

So The Dreamers and Bram Stoker’s Dracula are erotica, but Debbie Does Dallas is porn.

Sound good to you? What is your definition? Is there any difference, or is porn just something that erotica writers don’t want to admit they write?
