frostbite_bannerSo I asked myself, How do I shift away from the usual vampire fare, even though I like that sort of thing? I want to write something a little different.

I know! Let’s set it in the historic Wild West in winter!

And that’s how the gothic Western vampire short story “Gravedigger” came into existence, and it was a blast to write, if not quite as fun to edit. :) More info to come, like the summary, as we approach November.

“Gravedigger” is now part of the Total-E-Bound Frostbite winter collection of four vampire tales. I’m not familiar with any of the other authors, but I’m thrilled to be a part of it, and the cover is so wonderfully dark and gothic, and I’m such a sucker (no pun) for that. I hope they do a print book of it so I can gaze upon the shiny in person.

The collection will be available for preorder on Nov. 1, 2013, and comes out on Nov. 15 through Total-E-Bound and Dec. 13 everywhere else.

winterhowl_800 - smallAlways exciting, your first novel being made widely available. I’m be on the Total-e-Bound lazy susan on the home page for a week. My absolutely gorgeous cover is one of the first things people see when they go to the site. (Btw, print books should become available at the end of March.)

In my opinion, there’s nothing more Christmas-y than a story about bloody werewolves and often-naked shapeshifters. Then again, it is called Winter Howl, set about a month before Christmas. Think of it as something to curl up with on a cold winter’s night, something to warm your bed on Christmas Eve. I put the X in X-mas, baby.

I’ll do more official release celebrations after the New Year, since I’ll be able to afford things like bookmarks and magnets and coffee mugs. I’ll have a Trivia post on stuff that didn’t make it into the novel or to hint at things coming up in Cry Wolf. I’ll also be sending out stuff for reviews, so we’ll see how that goes. I may have a giveaway or two. I’m new at this, figuring out what works, so bear with me.

Purchase Winter Howl here. Filled with hot m/f action with a werewolf and steaming f/f action with a malamute shapeshifter. Plenty of rough sex, some D/s dynamic (nothing official), and even a menage a trois in there. Enjoy!

Here, have an f/f excerpt:

“Am I going to start as usual, or are you?” Britt asked.

Since Renee did not even know where to begin or what the question really was, she waited for Britt to start.

Britt inhaled to brace herself, then went into it. “Okay, I know I kind of stepped into it by kissing you in the middle of a crowded room when it was the last thing you expected or maybe even wanted. But I can’t apologise. It was going to happen sometime. I knew that, and I guess you suspected it might. That makes me question my covertness, but that’s not the point. The point is that we have a decision to make. Do you want to pursue this, this new angle of what I think we’ve always had? I don’t know whether you think the same way. You’ve always kept what you think or feel pretty close to the vest, even though I know that you tell me more than you tell everyone else. But I sometimes have to feel my way through the craziness that is your mind. And I don’t usually babble like this, but you know that I’m…”

“Nervous,” Renee finished for her.

“Yes.” Britt relaxed her shoulders a bit.

Renee bit her lip as she considered what to do. Her lip felt dry, and she licked it a little, sensing how dry her whole mouth was now.

The hum of continued conversation from the other side of the curtains reminded her that they were not really alone, but the fact that no one could see them gave her a little bit of courage, and she stood from her perch on the end of her bed and walked over to where Britt sat, then stepped between Britt’s knees. Even sitting, Britt did not have to bend her neck too much to see Renee. And Renee did not have to lean down very far before she was eye-to-eye with Britt. She was surprised at her own daring, her own willingness to push herself through some of the barriers that kept her from really connecting. She threaded her fingers through Britt’s hair, burying her hands in the mass of dark brown curls.

Britt had always been a grounding influence, and this was another time that she did not disappoint.

Renee felt the flutter of Britt’s breath on her lips as she leaned closer, using her grip on Britt’s hair to angle her head just right. Britt slid her fingers over the curve of Renee’s hips, pulling her even closer, and they were kissing again. It was completely different when they were alone, much easier for each to experience the sheer sensation of the other, every touch, every sigh that no one else could hear.

Britt had to be the one to bring the kiss to the next level. Renee did not exactly understand the logistics of a kiss in practice, but Britt took her teaching role in stride. The warmth of the woman’s tongue against Renee’s lower lip was amazing, not at all what she had expected—she had known that tongues were a part of some kisses, but she hadn’t thought she would enjoy that. She was pleasantly surprised as Britt slid her tongue against Renee’s own.

It took a hand on Renee’s to tell her that she was holding too tightly to Britt’s hair, and they broke apart, laughing a little.

“Sorry,” Renee muttered.

“No,” Britt said. “It’s okay. It’s good that you’re excited. I want you excited.” She slipped a hand beneath Renee’s shirt to press the palm of her hand on the flat of Renee’s stomach. “And I want you to do what you want, what feels good for you, Renee. I promise you won’t break me, and feeling your way is half the fun. It’s okay to make mistakes. You know that you can trust me, and I know that I can trust you. It’s the safest place in the world, right here. All right?”

If you’re a VIP member of Total-E-Bound, you get early releases of TEB stories, including Winter Howl, which is available to VIP members a whole month before everyone else!

If you’d rather not become a VIP member, you can still pre-order Winter Howl, and receive it Dec. 24.

And now is a good time to do either one, since Cyber Monday sales mean Winter Howl is 10% off.

I’ve also been approved for Winter Howl to be available in print at the end of March. I can’t tell you how happy I am about that. Fewer royalties, but I like people like me to have the opportunity to hold a book in their hands.

And just as a fun bit of trivia, my cover was used for the Black Friday ad banner, which made me irrationally squee-y.

Editing Winter Howl

So, Winter Howl is coming out at the end of December, and I just got the first edits in to my editor. (A little less than two weeks after she got them to me, just so you know I wasn’t sitting on them for months and working on them last minute.) Holy cow, things are moving fast.

I thought I was going to write about Winter Howl during the editing process and share ALL the thoughts, but as it turned out, I was so busy trying to get it done so that I can finish another project before November that there was no time for sharing.

Here are a few things, though:

– Reading for the purpose of correcting edits is not the same as reading it the first time through and editing it all by yourself. The parts that usually get me worked up were all business during the edits.

– I made a few utterly hilarious mistakes, so the way my editor pointed them out was good for a giggle.

– I edited 250 pages in four days. This was made easier by the tracking feature in Word, since many of the changes I accepted were British punctuation and spelling as well as independent body parts that needed to be reattached, which was just a matter of alternate wording. So most of the time, I was just reading through and clicking Accept.

– There were many parts that I couldn’t remember what I meant and the sentences gave no context. I am mysterious, but you’ll never know that. Those sentences got nixed.

– The biggest change was adding a whole new chunk of a scene in to address safe sex. I generally don’t do that, as I mention in that post. But my editor brought it up, and I figured out a way to bring it into the story without interrupting the fantasy, which is my main concern. It’s brief, but it does the job.

– I really don’t like double-space. I don’t know why it makes a difference to my reading, but it does. It makes everything seem juvenile to me, not just my writing. But I recognize that as my own quirk, and I’m pretty sure most other people don’t have that problem.

– By the third day, I was getting a little worn down with the “fix this, fix that.” I know my editor loves the story, and I really don’t take any of the corrections personally. They were all very needed. But apparently I need a little validation once in a while.

– I still love this story. I think, emotionally, I’m past it. I got out what needed to be got out, and now I’m two years later and dealing with new things. But the story is a good one, and I’m looking forward to starting the second book in the Sanctuary trilogy.

Picture of a malamute, not a wolf. Yes, it’s relevant.

This is the news that I’ve been sitting on for about a month, but I got the contract back today, and so it’s official.

My shapeshifter and werewolf novel Frigid Bitch, now understandably titled Winter Howl (and henceforth tagged as such), has been accepted by Total-E-Bound and will be available as in e-book and trade paperback either November or December. TEB is doing some rearranging with how it releases books, so I’m not entirely sure. More news as it develops.

As I go through the edits a little later this year, I’m sure I’ll have plenty of thoughts to share, and closer to the release date, I’ll share some tasty excerpts and teases. Winter Howl was truly a pleasure to write, in more ways than one, and I’m thrilled that other people will be able to share that with me. Also, Winter Howl is the first book of the Sanctuary trilogy, which means that now that Winter Howl has been accepted, NaNo2012 will find me starting the second novel in the trilogy, working title Cry Wolf.

If there’s one thing that getting accepted makes me feel, besides fucking exciting, it’s that I want more of this. Wolf Girl still needs editing, but I want to write more, I want to share more. I have to remember that I only have so many hours in a day and writing is not my day job and I write for many different audiences. Fortunately, it’s something that I can do everyday, even if it isn’t full time.

Seriously, y’all, this has been a good year for me. One short e-book, two short stories in an anthology, and a novel. Hard to ask for more.

The State laws ensure peace, but at the price of passion. How can a figurehead Queen and a simple magician bring magic and passion back?

My long short story “Calling the Dragons Home” is available for pre-order at Total-E-Bound. The e-book comes out Aug. 6, 2012.

Description:

Syra is Queen of the State, bound like every citizen by the Edicts of Detan – laws that ensure peace, but at the price of passion. Every aspect of life is controlled by these laws, encouraging moderation and repressing any excess of emotion. Magic, too, is forbidden except for simple parlor tricks.

The court magician, Gilian, reveals to her in secret that the State was once Dragonsong – a land of dragons and full of magic. The dragons were exiled and disappeared, and the magic was wiped out of the State, and with them all the accompanying pains and pleasures that make life worth living. Syra realises that the State has lasted too long in its lifeless existence; an existence that she knows is not enough.

With the help of Gilian, she vows to break free from the stifling State and rediscover the magic of passion in order to call the dragons home and resurrect Dragonsong.

I’m very pleased to share that my long short story “Calling the Dragons Home” has been accepted by Total-E-Bound for e-book publication. It’s release date is Aug. 6, which means I’ll have stories coming out August, September, and October, so that’s a good publishing year for me. :)

I’ve moaned about being a long story writer a couple of times on this blog. Even my short stories tend toward around 8k and up to 15k, if I give them all the room to breathe that I find appropriate. I originally started writing CTDH for the Thrones of Desire call for submissions. When it crossed 10k and I was still writing, I knew I had no hope of editing it down without losing very important parts of the story. In fact, working with my TEB editor, CTDH ended up growing rather than shrinking, which was a new experience for me.

Given its state as a long story around 13-14k words, it ended up in the limbo area of too long for a short story and too short for a novella, which meant that the odds of it ever being printed were limited. That was when I first started seriously looking into e-books.

Total-E-Bound has been wonderful to me so far, completely professional, answering all my questions and dealing with me as I navigated some of the aspects of publishing that I was worried about (since my only experience has been in anthologies thus far). I am really looking forward to working with them now with CTDH and possibly in the future. For novel-length stories, they do offer print books on occasion in addition to their e-books, which also encourages me, as I like both options.

As far as CTDH itself, I’ll cover the story more when we get closer to the release date. So, this fall is going to be a busy one for me, but it will probably also get more interesting for everyone involved. :) It’s a story that I’m proud of and that I enjoyed writing. Sword-and-sorcery fantasy doesn’t come naturally to me – so it’s kind of funny I’ve got two S&S fantasy short stories coming out this year – but I especially enjoyed the experience of world-building that it requires.

I recently finished all the edits with my editor – and she caught a couple truly hilarious mistypes I managed to miss during my read-throughs – so now we wait for the publishing side of things to work its magic. When I get a cover, I’ll be sure to share it.
